The Matt Taylor Disk Optimizer - TaylorDo

Quick Start

Status: InProgress

Install the product using default settings. You will need to specify what volume type your disks are; System, Development, Archive and Data are the available types. Mixed drives (or if you are unsure) should be typed as Development. No further action is required... once it's done.

First Time Use

The first time you optimize (a Yearly) will run quietly for up to 50 hours without significantly impacting your performance while it runs. The time depends on several things such as the state of your drive and prior optimizations and your use of the system.

Optimization Scheduling (InProgress)

The task scheduler will replace Windows Defrag with TaylorDo taks for Yearly, Monthly, Weekly and Daily (mid week) optimization.

The DoTaskOnDemand command will disable all schduled tasks until you issue a DoTasksOnSchedule command is issued. DoTaskReset will recreate the schedule should you need to. Finally, a DoTaskRestoreWindows would remove all entries and restore the standard Windows defragmentation.

Customizing Your Zones

Prioritizing (ordering) your data:

Each volume is divided into up to 21 zones based upon the type or category of information contained therein. The first dozen are system releated and can generally be ignored. If you ever get data in Zone 21 please contact me; this is unassigned and a type of error.

For the most part, statistically, you shouldn't need to change the order of these zones. However, the importance of these categories determines their order based on your systems and needs. Examining the report created by any run gives precise information on zone size and location on which to base these decisions.

Here is the complete list for the Any Complex Volume script:

Zone Description
1. Boot OS Boot executables.
2. Boot Data Boot Data and files.
3. Program Hints Windows keeps a database of the boot log executables.
4. Program Hints Data Any boot log program hints files.
5. Programs The programs you use.
6. Programs Windows Windows OS has a large code base.
7. Programs Data Program data and files.
8. IDE and Scripts Developer and Scripting executables.
9. Development and ToDo Development and ToDo files and data.
10. The MFT The OS Master File Table.
11. The Directories (only) This is the directories (themselves) only. Important.
12. Windows System Files ToDo

17. System Other Data ToDo
18. Reference Information ToDo
19. Space Hogs (huge items) ToDo
20. Archives and Backups ToDo
21. The Twilight Zone
Unassigned - Zone 99
ToDo

You can change the ordering of zones to match your priorities and individual needs.

Attention Gamers: I need feedback and real world information for an optimized gamer definition. The zone location works out to be correct due to the other zones being much smaller.

Changing the contents of a zone

Where you want to change the composition of a zone you will be working in these two directories.

1. SelectCategory

This defines what qualifies to be included in the zone. It does NOT include matching items from the zones that preceeded it.

2. Zones \
ZoneTypeSelect

This is the more complex select statement(s) that, using SelectCategory, defines what information belongs within the zone. and in addition excludes special catagories that belongs in subsequent zones.
You are always working with (selecting from) what has not been previously placed in a zone. Whatever still remains to be used in a zone.
